That’s a wrap on 2022-2023! What a big, beautiful year: Charlotte @oper_frankfurt, Ariodante @israelopera, Xerxes @komischeoperberlin, a concert with @harry_bicket and @oslmusic @carnegiehall, @tedddrh’s new Zauberflöte and @tilmankoehler’s Le vin herbé @oper_frankfurt. Grateful, happy, exhausted. Time for some R&R in the US of A!

But also…I’m already getting excited about next season, which includes two new title roles in new productions: La Cenerentola @bostonlyricopera with @nawdms and @operamaestro, and Ascanio in Alba @oper_frankfurt with @aldenpiano and @nina_brazier, plus Mozart’s Requiem with @nyphilharmonic and @jaapvanzweden @lincolncenter❣️

As I prepare for some auditions, I just listened back to this aria. I first sang it as a student, a million years ago - as you can imagine, my score is marked up to the gills…you can barely read the music anymore! It’s such a heartbreaking bit of text, I thought I’d share a rough translation here:

There - let my tears flow;
they do me good, my dear.

The tears we do not cry
fall back into our souls,
and with their patient drops
hammer the sad and weary heart!

Its resistance is finally exhausted; the heart is hollowed out and becomes weak:
It is too big, nothing fills it;
and too fragile, everything shatters it!…everything shatters it!

So sad/true, right?! Finally debuting Charlotte in January was a dream come true. So in love with this role, this music…I guess I’m a sucker for heartbreak!

Yesterday, on Händel’s birthday, I got to perform the glorious role of Ariodante. This music, this character, means so much to me. I first sang the role @juilliardschool with my mentor #stephenwadsworth and it was a powerful moment for me. Now, after 6 years honing my craft in the ensemble @oper_frankfurt, I feel so solidly (finally) in my power and able to give this role everything I have. Happy to share these backstage clips of Dopo Notte 🥰 HBD Handel, thanks for all you gave us!!
